B2Gold is recruiting a Safety & Ventilation Officer (Underground), in Otjiwarongo, Namibia.
Description
  • The Safety & Ventilation Officer (Underground) will be responsible for the underground operations safety and environmental management and ventilation monitoring
Duties
  • Underground Safety Management:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Health and Safety Management System, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and inspection reports on compliance with mine standards and legislative requirements
  • Drive/implement underground safety policies and procedures
  • Enforce legislation, managerial procedures, policies and codes of practice related to underground operations
  • Ensure contractor compliance with B2Gold and legislative standards
  • Ventilation monitoring & Environmental Management:
  • Measure & Monitor primary and secondary ventilation as well as gases
  • Compile quarterly mine ventilation and rescue plan as per legal requirements
  • Reporting compliance against the plan
  • Advise contractor on optimum auxiliary ventilation system
  • Manage environmental aspects related to the underground operations
  • Ensure B2Gold and legal standards are complied with
  • Minimise hydrocarbon spillages
  • Coordinate clean-up of spillages
  • Conduct inspections and report on findings
  • Investigation & Inspection:
  • Carry out field inspections on underground safety, health and environment (e.g. checks of ventilation quality, temperature, air quality, operational procedures, housekeeping, etc.)
  • Coordinate, lead and assist with incident/accident/ICAM investigations
  • Report on and inform all stakeholders of all incidents, accidents and emergencies
  • Report on findings and propose corrective and preventative actions
  • Training, Induction & Emergency Preparedness:
  • Assist the Training Officer with Health and Safety training
  • Oversee Quality Assurance/Quality Control of Occupational Hygiene Monitoring Program for underground
  • Assist Otjikoto Mine Rescue Services (MRS) Personnel in maintaining an emergency preparedness, response and recovery program – with an emphasis on underground operations
  • Ensure contractor proficiency and emergency response equipment readiness of contractor PROTO teams
  • Advise, implement & maintain procedure emergency preparedness/SOP’s relating to underground
  • Safety, Health and Environment:
  • Compliance with the B2Gold Golden Life Saving Commitments, Code of Conduct and all Company Policies and HSE Management and Performance Standards
  • Comply with the Namibian Mining Act (Labour Act, Ordinance, Minerals Act, and Explosives Act) and Regulations clauses that apply to underground and surface operations
  • Oriented on the Labour Act 6 of 1992: Regulations Pertaining to Health and Safety, Ordinance 20 of 1968, Explosives Act, Minerals Act, Petroleum Act, Namibian Mining Act and Regulations and Mine Safety and Health standards, thus, shall comply with its clauses that apply to the assigned work area
Requisites
  • Grade 12
  • Diploma in Safety Management / Occupational Health & Safety with extensive underground working experience or Underground Blasting Ticket with certification in Ventilation and extensive underground working experience or Trade Certificate with certification in Ventilation and extensive underground working experience
  • Minimum four years’ experience within the health and safety discipline in an underground mining environment. Proven experience within the field of underground ventilation
  • Thorough knowledge of underground mining operations and, specifically, duties of a Safety & Ventilation Officer
  • Thorough knowledge of Safety Management Systems (e.g. OHSAS 18001/33001/ISO45001) and the Namibian Mine Health and Safety Act (1992)
  • Experience with underground emergency response (Proto team) will be an added advantage
  • Valid code 08 (BE) driver’s license
  • Valid First Aid Certificate and Certificate of Fitness
  • Registration with a professional safety association (e.g. SAMTRAC, NIOSH or NEBOSH)
